Dystonia

When muscles pull or contract without you choosing it.

A short film of what happens — no sound needed.

1Step 1

What's happening

Dystonia is when muscles contract on their own, pulling the body into twisted postures or repeated movements.

It can affect one area — the neck, a hand, the eyelids — or be more widespread.

It often worsens with stress or certain tasks, and can ease with a light, particular touch.

Medical treatment and targeted rehabilitation together can substantially reduce the pulling, the pain, and the disruption to daily life.

2Step 2

What you may see at home

  • The neck or head pulled or turned to one side
  • Cramping or an odd posture of the hand during writing or fine tasks
  • Involuntary blinking or eye closing
  • Twisting postures of the trunk or limbs
  • Movements that worsen with tiredness or stress and ease with rest

Dystonia is a recognised movement condition — not a habit and not 'in the mind'. The right help makes a real difference.

3Step 3

How we help

  1. 1We retrain posture and use stretching to ease the pull and protect the joints.
  2. 2We practise specific, task-based movement for the affected area.
  3. 3We time the work around any botulinum-toxin treatment, while the muscle is quieter.
  4. 4We use relaxation and pacing, since stress and tiredness reliably make dystonia worse.
4Step 4

What getting better looks like

  1. Starting

Easing the pull, protecting joints, and learning what calms the affected muscle.

  2. With treatment

Rehabilitation alongside medical treatment retrains steadier, more comfortable movement.

  3. Over time

Most people see real reductions in the pulling, the pain, and the disruption.

Dystonia is managed rather than cured. We are honest about that — and honest that the combined work makes daily life meaningfully better.
